National First-aid-knowledge Competition

The Sulinet Program Office and the Hungarian National Ambulance and Emergency Service organized a National First-aid-knowledge Competition for student teams with three members at the age of 12 to 18. Synergistic partner was the Hungarian Red Cross.

The aim of the competition was the building of knowledge of the students who are interested in first-aid and to deepen their biologic, physiologic and health care cognition.

All Hungarian elementary and middle school learners who were more than 12 and less than 18 years old could join the competition. From one school more than one team could take part in the competition and in one team the members could be different old.

The National First-aid-knowledge Competition started on 1st February 2004 and the final part of the competition was in 28th and 29th May 2004. The student teams had to register themselves through the competition‘s homepage (http://www.sulinet.hu/oev). The registered team got a password.

1078 teams registered and 485 teams sent back the first test series (http://www.sulinet.hu/oev/csapatok.php).

Every visitor of the website could get the test papers from the homepage of the competition and the teams who were registered and got a password could send it back via the web. On the test paper there were different kinds of tasks (e.g. quiz questions with pictures or motion-pictures, essays, experiments) in the topic of first-aid, biology, physiology and health care. The participants had to solve four tests (in February, March, April and May). Recommended bibliography was also shown on the homepage.

The final session of the National First-aid-knowledge Competition was in Budapest and it took 2 days (http://www.sulinet.hu/tart/cikk/aa/0/20152/1). The best 30 teams who completed the tests were invited to it. On the first day of the two-day long final session of the competition the pupils visited the centre of the Hungarian National Ambulance and Emergency Service in Budapest where they could got to know the work of the ambulance service, and staff. The participants took part in complex cardiopulmonary resuscitation training and they could learn about the topic of the most frequent accidents and prevention methods. On the second day the 30 teams had to do practical exercises where they could show their practical knowledge in the area of first aid. The first prize was three digital cameras for the three members of the team.
